This report documents the proceedings of the National Workshop on Safer Cities for Women, held in August 2010 in Delhi. The workshop was an attempt by Jagori to share the tools and approaches of creating safe and gender inclusive cities that link women’s initiatives with local government and other key stakeholders, as a way to influence public policy and address causes of violence against women in a systemic way.

This report presents the findings of Gender Safety Audit conducted in the Delhi Gate- Ajmeri Gate stretch of the road with a view to create inclusive urban spaces and enhance ‘right to the city’ of all people, including women, to live, work and move around without fear or difficulty. The report is richly supplemented by numerous maps marking areas with high volume of women users, areas reported as unsafe by women, etc.

This report is an attempt at mapping the key factors of risk and safety of women in public spaces in Delhi. The report reveals stark differences in the levels of safety in different localities in the city. The report discusses infrastructural issues related to lighting, signage, etc. in great detail and thereby identifies problem areas which can be taken up with the concerned authorities.

This report presents the findings of the research undertaken by Jagori in Delhi as part of the Gender Inclusive Cities (GIC) Project to locate issues of safety and inclusion in a wider context of urban growth and governance. The GIC findings stress the need to recast the city and its different spaces in order to make Delhi truly inclusive and violence-free for all its citizens.

The report presents the findings of a baseline survey on women’s safety in public spaces in Delhi. The survey encompasses aspects such as nature and forms of gender-based violence faced by women; spots in the city perceived to be unsafe and inaccessible to women; strategies of defence adopted by women; role of the government and police in safeguarding women’s rights; and societal attitudes to sexual harassment. The study is unique in eliciting the perception and experience of men regarding the issue.
